Almost awful Where to start... A bound version wasn't available, and since it was a required text I had no choice but to get the loose-leaf version. Is this why it doesn't seem to have had a full, professional review? Compared to almost all the other, often uneven, texts I have had to wade through in years of graduate study, the writing and editing often seems deadening/condescending. Perhaps it's intended for a low-level undergrad audience; for a professional master's degree it feels insultingly didactic. I already own a graduate degree from an ivy league university, so perhaps I'm expecting too much. Still, a little bit of outsider input would probably have helped this effort--all four authors are from the same department at the same college. To make matters worse, the font size is grayscale (some of the headings are almost whitescale) and vanishingly small. For a text about special education, which includes teaching the visually impaired, this feels almost like a cruel joke. On the other hand, equipped with my strongest pair of readers and good reading light, I was able to make out the larger main body text, and it appears that some of the case studies are really quite engaging and valuable. Consequently I didn't give this one star--but I had to think about it.Ok textbook It is a good overall special education textbook. It doesnt really have a whole lot of strategies, which is what I was looking for.The e-textbook has lots of links to vidoe clips but they are all youtube clips so you can access the without the e-textbook.. The one thing I did like was the quizzes after each chapter (only accessed by e-text).Not a good choice if you need text-to-speech. Hypocritical - Special Ed Book and accessible features are disabled from the publisher?! I use Kindle for as many text and books as possible. I need to use the text-to-speech feature to learn and study best. It is not activated for this book, nor is Xray. The material is quality and up to date, but the loose leaf format is annoying in the digital version. Additionally, not having active links for the supplemental activities is misleading. For the price, this should be an example of accommodated/ Universal Design options for reading a studying with all of the appropriate exercises included for a variety of learning/studying styles. This is a poor demonstration of how to accommodate student.

Title: America Pdf Past and Present, Volume 1 (10th Edition)
Author: Robert A. Divine
Published Date: 2012-06-21

"The approach transcends my outlook on teaching a survey course in American History. The text does a good job of incorporating new information and preceptions into the historical narrtive without taking away from the standard history of various time periods. The authors do an excellent job of integrating social and cultural issues without over-burdenig the student reader."    - James S. Taw, Valdosta State University  "Sidebar essays highlight key moments in AmericanhHistory, and how historians interpret the past. It is a highly readable text, and an easy one fo teach from in class."    - John Howard Smith, Texas A&M University at Commerce  "The narrative flow is exceptional and the chronoligical organization fits most of our instructors' teaching methonds. The content balances strict chronology with good topical coverage and depth of coverage. I believe the book has one of the best structures and provides just enough social history but remains focused on the course of key events and persons. This book has such a great variety of online resources for the instructors and excellent online supplementary materials for the students."    - Laura Matysek Wood, Tarrant County College, Northwest  "This is by far one of the best organized, most readable textbooks covering Unites States history available on the market today. It makes my job much easier, knowing that as i advance through time in my class lectures, students can follow along in the textbook in a logical sequence with the much appreciated timelines in each chapter."    - Richard B. McCaslin, University of North Texas

A Small Place Download

ISBN: 0374527075
Title: A Small Place Pdf
Author: Jamaica Kincaid
Published Date: 1988
Page: 81

“Ms. Kincaid writes with passion and conviction . . . [with] a poet's understanding of how politics and history, private and public events, overlap and blur.” ―The New York Times“A jeremiad of great clarity and force that one might have called torrential were the language not so finely controlled.” ―Salman Rushdie“A rich and evocative prose that is also both urgent and poetic . . . Kincaid is a witness to what is happening in our West Indian back yards. And I trust her.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review“Kincaid continues to write with a unique, compelling voice that cannot be found anywhere else. Her small books are worth a pile of thicker--and hollower--ones.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“This is truth, beautifully and powerfully stated . . . In truly lyrical language that makes you read aloud, [Kincaid] takes you from the dizzying blue of the Caribbean to the sewage of hotels and clubs where black Antiguans are only allowed to work . . . Truth, wisdom, insight, outrage, and cutting wit.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Wonderful reading . . . Tells more about the Caribbean in 80 pages than all the guidebooks.” ―The Philadelphia InquirerJamaica Kincaid was born in St. Johns, Antigua. Her books include At the Bottom of the River, Annie John, Lucy, The Autobiography of My Mother, and My Brother (all published by FSG). She lives with her family in Vermont.

A brilliant look at colonialism and its effects in Antigua--by the author of Annie John

"If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the Prime Minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a Prime Minister would want an airport named after him--why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen . . ."

So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies where she grew up.

Lyrical, sardonic, and forthright by turns, in a Swiftian mode, A Small Place cannot help but amplify our vision of one small place and all that it signifies.

Great book This is a wonderful book! I had to read it for a college course, and it will change the way you think about other countries that are seen as the perfect vacation destinations. Great read.I had to read this for a writing class A short but brutal look at colonialism. The form can be off putting as she writes in long almost extremely long sentencesLove it. Great read. Great book
