Praise for The Art of Invisibility"How would it feel to find out that your neighbor and friend has secretly observed you in your own home for years? The place that should be most private to you was not, and the intruder's devices themselves weren't something you'd ever have thought to look for. This kind of behavior is the opposite of giving normal people freedom and security, of valuing and respecting them as humans--and it's happening more and more. The answer to peeping eyes and cyber theft is to move society toward greater cyber-security and it all starts with essential education about being private and invisible in our daily lives. Kevin's book is the must read in this new world."―Steve Wozniak, cofounder, Apple Inc."The FBI's most-wanted hacker."―Wired"Who better than Mitnick -- internationally wanted hacker turned Fortune 500 security consultant -- to teach you how to keep your data safe from spear phishing, computer worms, and Fancy Bears?"―Esquire"Offers a sobering reminder of how our raw data -- from email, cars, home Wi-Fi networks and so on -- makes us vulnerable."―Amy Webb, New York Times Book Review"Mitnick's new book aims to help everyone -- from the everyday internet users to the hardcore paranoid -- do a better job of keeping personal information private."―Laura Hautala, CNETPraise for The Art of Deception"The most famous computer hacker in the world. A tour de force."―Publishers Weekly"The world's most famous computer hacker and cybercult hero...has written a blueprint for system security based on his own experiences. Required reading for IT professionals, this book is highly recommended for public, academic, and corporate libraries."―Library Journal Praise for Ghost in the Wires"Intriguing, insightful and extremely educational into the mind of one who truly mastered the art of social engineering with the use of a computer and modern day technologies. I strongly believe that one can learn a great deal about protecting themselves once they understand how another one perpetrates the crime."―Frank W. Abagnale, author of Catch Me if You Can Kevin Mitnick has been the subject of countless profiles published and broadcast throughout the world. Mitnick's leading penetration-testing team is highly respected and sought after for its security services by the world's top corporations and governments. Real-world advice on how to be invisible online from "the FBI's most-wanted hacker" (Wired)

Your every step online is being tracked and stored, and your identity easily stolen. Big companies and big governments want to know and exploit what you do, and privacy is a luxury few can afford or understand.

In this explosive yet practical book, computer-security expert Kevin Mitnick uses true-life stories to show exactly what is happening without your knowledge, and teaches you "the art of invisibility": online and everyday tactics to protect you and your family, using easy step-by-step instructions. Reading this book, you will learn everything from password protection and smart Wi-Fi usage to advanced techniques designed to maximize your anonymity.

Invisibility isn't just for superheroes--privacy is a power you deserve and need in the age of Big Brother and Big Data.

Pretty good hack in itself: a fairly comprehensive resource AND a good read! ****** Starts out with basic security info concepts and builds on that nicely. In two places you are referred to later chapters where the tool for spoofing the MAC address is never actually identified - so Google it! The book identifies and describes a lot of useful tools and techniques. I originally gave this a 4 - I had hoped to learn more from it. But I've just re-read it and pushed my rating from a 4 up to a 5 and wish I could give it a 6! I've been in security for quite a while and still learned a thing or two. When's the last time you enjoyed reading resource material? Great coverage of a great topic.A Must Read for Anyone Living in our Digital Age This is a very informative book. While I'm not looking to go underground or off- grid, I will be making changes to protect my privacy online. I was outraged by the decision made by our country's legislators to allow Internet providers to disclose and sell the online browsing histories of their customers, which could affect prospective jobs and insurance. For example, if you or your child have a health issue or disability, and you search the Internet for information, a prospective employer who has access to this browsing history could interpret this to mean you will take more time off from work, or be more of a liability with insurance. This is just one type of example the book brings up, among numerous other situations I would never have even thought about. Great book, and thank-you, Kevin Mitnick!Don't read this review! Seriously, stop reading now!!! I'm a 20 year IT sys admin and this book was awesome. Much of this stuff I knew already but Kevin puts it together like nobody else can; moreover, he puts it together so anyone can understand. It's not just a book about how to become invisible to today's technology grid, it's the Bible of how you are being screwed and used by what you probably don't understand about your favorite gadget, app or appliance.I don't care if you don't know the difference between Outlook or AOL, you need to get this book and finish it. It might very well be the most important book you read in the next five years.

Gifts of the Crow Pdf

ISBN: 1439198748
Title: Gifts of the Crow Pdf How Perception, Emotion, and Thought Allow Smart Birds to Behave Like Humans
Author: John Marzluff
Published Date: 2013-02-05
Page: 320

“Researchers writing about comparative human and nonhuman cognition always make brief, obligatory reference to the underlying neurological and hormonal systems, but Marzluff and Angell actually provide us with the details. In lucid, logical, and articulate prose, they carefully explain all the interrelated mechanisms involved in the fascinating behavior patterns of their corvid subjects and how these mechanisms relate to those of humans. Their book is indeed a gift, not only to those of us eager to learn about corvid behavior but also but also to those who wish to understand the bases for these actions.” Author: Irene M. Pepperberg, author of Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Uncovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process“John Marzluff and Tony Angell's amazing, true stories of crows who rage, grieve, give gifts, work together, and even design and use tools would be enough to make this book a great read. But these maverick scientists go a step further, and actually show how these birds' big brains, though different from our own, achieve many of the same feats. Gifts of the Crow is a gift to all of us who have argued for years that humans don't possess the only minds in the universe. This is one of the most exciting books I've read in a long time.” Author: Sy Montgomery, author of Birdology"In this important work, you’ll find stunning examples of crow emotionality and intelligence -- a triumphant vindication for those who have known all along that animals are capable of much more than they’re generally given credit for. . Crows dream as part of their learning process, for instance, and profile other individuals’ behavior and act accordingly. In many ways, their intelligence is equal to that of the great apes. Fascinating." Author: Stacey O'Brien, author of Wesley the Owl"Full of clear and detailed accounts of research...remarkable." Author: NYTimes"Angell’s illustrations of birds are exquisitely detailed... the book will instill in many readers a sense of wonder and curiosity at what these birds can do. An insightful look at some of our surprisingly capable feathered friends." Author: Kirkus"Amazing" Author: Seattle Times“Delightful… a series of intriguing stories and stunning illustrations that together reveal the sophisticated cognitive abilities of crows and their relationship with humans." Author: Nature"With its abundance of funny, awe-inspiring, and poignant stories, Gifts of the Crow portrays creatures who are nothing short of amazing. A testament to years of painstaking research and careful observation, this fully illustrated, riveting work is a thrilling look at one of nature's most wondrous creatures." Author: Guardian.co.uk"A great read, this book is a tribute to the little-known and underappreciated minds of the birds of the amazing corvid family. Serious and at times hilarious, it pulled me in with its telling anecdotes and scientific context. Most importantly, it acknowledges and explores the many complex similarities between crows' mental traits and our own." Author: Bernd Heinrich, author of Mind of the Raven“Gifts of the Crow is a compelling book. Filled with wonderful stories of regular people’s interactions with ravens, crows, and jays, it also cites engrossing scientific studies, reports on the field work of biologists, and offers detailed explanations of how the brain of a corvid actually works. I was fascinated.” Author: Suzie Gilbert, author of Flyaway: How A Wild Bird Rehabber Sought Adventure and Found Her Wings John Marzluff, Ph.D., is Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington. The author of four books and over one hundred scientific papers on various aspects of bird behavior, he is the recipient of the A. Brazier Howell, Board of Directors, and H.R. Painton awards from the Cooper Ornithological Society.Tony Angell has authored and/or illustrated a dozen award-winning books related to natural history.

Stan Coren’s groundbreaking The Intelligence of Dogs meets Bernd Heinrich’s classic Mind of the Raven in this astonishing, beautifully illustrated look at the uncanny intelligence and emotions of crows.

Playful, social, and passionate, crows have brains that are huge for their body size, which allows them to think, plan, and reconsider their actions. They also exhibit an avian kind of eloquence, mate for life, and associate with relatives and neighbors for years. And to people who care for them and feed them, they often give oddly touching gifts in return.

The ongoing connection between humans and crows—a cultural coevolution—has shaped both species for millions of years. Scientist John Marzluff teams up with artist-naturalist Tony Angell to tell amazing stories of these brilliant birds. With Marzluff’s extraordinary original research on the intelligence and startling abilities of corvids—crows, ravens, and jays—Angell’s gorgeous line drawings, and a lively joint narrative, the authors offer an in-depth look at these complex creatures and the traits and behaviors we share, including language, delinquency, frolic, passion, wrath, risk taking, and awareness. Crows gather around their dead, warn of impending doom, recognize people, commit murder of other crows, lure animals to their death, swill coffee and drink beer, design and use tools—including cars as nutcrackers—and windsurf and sled to play.

With its abundance of funny, awe-inspiring, and poignant stories, Gifts of the Crow portrays creatures who are nothing short of amazing.

Think birds are dummies? Then you haven't read THIS I got this book for the Kindle, and wanted to read it myself. However, my spouse, who was not so much a bird person, took a liking to it, and loaded it to his Kindle first. For the past two weeks as he's read this book, I get daily reports of how interesting the book is, how amazing these birds are, and what great anecdotes the author includes. The crows really do bring "gifts" to people they like. And they remember people as well. The book goes into a bit of the brain structure and in depth about genetically as well. When I read it, I may skip over the more technical and scientific aspects of the work. But I am happy to report that my observations about bird behavior, their habits and likes and fears, dovetails with what this author presents based on science and experiments, not just a layman's observations. I'm very pleased to report that my spouse has dropped the expression "bird brain" to indicate someone without cognitive powers. Now in our household there are two bird lovers. When I have a chance to read it, I'll update it from my non-scientific point of view. But, for all the good conversation it has already stimulated, it is worth reading.Great for Knowledge not Facts If you want to know more about corvids or you are a bird lover this is the perfect book for you. Just be warned that that the information in the book are full of scientific hypotheses and examples of corvid behavior rather than it is a hard scientific read. To make for this the author gives a healthy amount of scientific papers, he has personally read, in the back of the book to support his claims.I believe he does this because he wants you to enjoy reading this book and make you excited about the wonderful things corvids can do besides become a nusence in your life. He defintiently acheives these. And if you want to bite on something harder and read more in depth about corvids he prepares that in the back of the book. Great read!i love crows i learned so much from this book, not just about crows but about all birds.if you don't like crows, you'll at least end up respecting them after reading this. and you'll be far more informed about the natural world.on the other hand, if you don't like going outside and don't care for nature and prefer casinos and malls and TV, then you're hopeless and you should just jump off a cliff.a bit dense in its analysis/explanation of the neurobiology of bird/crow brains, but you can follow it, i think. i have an unfair advantage inasmuch as i have a solid medical/anatomy/physiology background.

“In this age of manufactured outrage and constant distraction, the ability to choose a focused inner stillness is arguably more important than ever before. Ryan Holiday's just brilliant." —Lance Armstrong“Whether you are an athlete, an investor, a writer or an entrepreneur, this little but wise and soulful book will open the door to a healthier, less anxious and more productive life and career.” —Arianna Huffington“Some authors give advice. Ryan Holiday distills wisdom. This book is a must read for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the frenetic demands of modern life." —Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism“Don’t be fooled. Within the pages of this unassuming little book lie a life-changing idea: that in order to move forward, we must learn to be still. Ryan Holiday has done it again.”—Sophia Amoruso, Co-Founder & CEO, Girlboss“This short and entertaining book provides useful tools and captivating examples on how to keep a healthy, clutter-free and productive mind.—Manu Ginobili, four time NBA champion and Olympic Gold Medalist "Ryan Holiday is among the most psychologically wise writers I know. I'm a fan of all of his work, including this new gem, Stillness is the Key. If you struggle—as I do—to find your center in the increasingly noisy and frenetic world we live in, then this book is for you." —Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit“In the world today the dangers are many—most notably, the endless distractions and petty battles that make us act without purpose or direction. In this book, through his masterful synthesis of Eastern and Western philosophy, Ryan Holiday teaches us all how to maintain our focus and presence of mind amid the sometimes overwhelming conflicts and troubles of 21st-century life.” —Robert Greene“Ryan Holiday is one of the brilliant writers and minds of our time. In Stillness is the Key he gives us the blueprint to clear our minds, recharge our souls and reclaim our power.” —Jon Gordon, author of The Energy Bus“Highly recommended. Great read.”—CJ McCollum, Portland Trailblazers"Ryan Holiday is a national treasure and a master in the field of self-mastery. In his most compelling book yet, he has mined both the classical literature of the ancient world and cultural touchstones from Mister Rogers to Tiger Woods, and brought his learnings to us in terms that the frantic, distracted, over-caffeinated modern mind can understand and put to use. Highly recommended."—Steven Pressfield, bestselling author of The War of Art and The Artist's Journey“A timely, vividly realized reminder to slow down and harness the restorative wonders of serenity.”—Kirkus Reviews Ryan Holiday is one of the world's foremost thinkers and writers on ancient philosophy and its place in everyday life. He is a sought-after speaker, strategist, and the author of many bestselling books including The Obstacle Is the Way; Ego Is the Enemy; and The Daily Stoic. His books have been translated into over 30 languages and read by over two million people worldwide. He lives outside Austin, Texas, with his family.

In The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, bestselling author Ryan Holiday made ancient wisdom wildly popular with a new generation of leaders in sports, politics, and technology. In his new book, Stillness Is the Key, Holiday draws on timeless Stoic and Buddhist philosophy to show why slowing down is the secret weapon for those charging ahead.

All great leaders, thinkers, artists, athletes, and visionaries share one indelible quality. It enables them to conquer their tempers. To avoid distraction and discover great insights. To achieve happiness and do the right thing. Ryan Holiday calls it stillness--to be steady while the world spins around you.

In this book, he outlines a path for achieving this ancient, but urgently necessary way of living. Drawing on a wide range of history's greatest thinkers, from Confucius to Seneca, Marcus Aurelius to Thich Nhat Hanh, John Stuart Mill to Nietzsche, he argues that stillness is not mere inactivity, but the doorway to self-mastery, discipline, and focus.

Holiday also examines figures who exemplified the power of stillness: baseball player Sadaharu Oh, whose study of Zen made him the greatest home run hitter of all time; Winston Churchill, who in balancing his busy public life with time spent laying bricks and painting at his Chartwell estate managed to save the world from annihilation in the process; Fred Rogers, who taught generations of children to see what was invisible to the eye; Anne Frank, whose journaling and love of nature guided her through unimaginable adversity.

More than ever, people are overwhelmed. They face obstacles and egos and competition. Stillness Is the Key offers a simple but inspiring antidote to the stress of 24/7 news and social media. The stillness that we all seek is the path to meaning, contentment, and excellence in a world that needs more of it than ever.

Title: The Ride of a Lifetime Pdf Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company

A grand vision defined: The CEO of Disney, one of Time's most influential people of 2019, shares the ideas and values he embraced to reinvent one of the most beloved companies in the world and inspire the people who bring the magic to life.

Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company's history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets. Twelve years later, Disney is the largest, most respected media company in the world, counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and he is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our era.

In The Ride of a Lifetime, Robert Iger shares the lessons he's learned while running Disney and leading its 200,000 employees, and he explores the principles that are necessary for true leadership, including:

  • Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming.
  • Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity.
  • Decisiveness. All decisions, no matter how difficult, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale.
  • Fairness. Treat people decently, with empathy, and be accessible to them.

This book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for 45 years, since the day he started as the lowliest studio grunt at ABC. It's also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the Star Wars mythology.

"The ideas in this book strike me as universal", Iger writes. "Not just to the aspiring CEOs of the world, but to anyone wanting to feel less fearful, more confidently themselves, as they navigate their professional and even personal lives."

Love Poems for People with Children Pdf

Title: Love Poems for People with Children Pdf
Author: John Kenney
Published Date: 2019-10-15
Page: 112

“[A] hilarious look into parenting.”—TODAY “Often profound, often hilarious, Kenney captures what it's like to raise a human being from the ground up.”—Cleveland Scene“[Love Poems for People with Children] will be immediately relatable to all parents and a much needed laugh. So the next time you're hiding out in a public restroom, like the subject in one of the poems, give this book a read.”—Parkersburg News & Sentinel“Perfect as a stocking stuffer for that soon-to-be-parent or the already-a-parent-I-never-realized-how-good-my-hair-looked-unshowered-for-four-days on your holiday list....These little gems make life glow a little brighter.”—Fredericksburg Free Lance Star John Kenney is the New York Times bestselling author of the humorous poetry collection Love Poems for Married People, and the novels Talk to Me and Truth in Advertising, which won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. He has worked for many years as a copywriter. He has also been a contributor to The New Yorker magazine since 1999. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

In the spirit of his wildly popular New Yorker pieces and the New York Times bestseller Love Poems for Married People, Thurber-prize winner John Kenney presents a hilarious new collection of poetry for people with children.

With the same brilliant wit and hilarious realism that made Love Poems for Married People such a hit, John Kenney is back with a brand new collection of poems, this time taking on the greatest "joy" in life: children. Kenney covers it all, from newborns, toddlers, and sleep deprivation, to the terrible twos, terrible tweens, and terrible teens. A parent's love is unconditional, but sometimes that button can't help but be pushed. Between back to school shopping, summer vacations that never end, the awkwardness of puberty, the inevitable post-college moving back in, and more, a parent's job is never done, whether they like it or not.

I love these poems. Every poem makes me laugh. Every poem is universally relatable to parenthood. A must read for any parent with a sense of humor. This (and his other book of poems) makes a great gift, coffee table book or conversation piece!Laughing is good for the soul! Written as only a parent could!TOO FUNNY! You're gonna relate.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Commonwealth and State of Wonder comes Ann Patchett's most powerful novel to date: a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love, and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves, and of who we really are.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.

The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.

Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they're together. Throughout their lives, they return to the well-worn story of what they've lost with humor and rage. But when at last they're forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

Ann Patchett's marvelous new novel This is my favorite of her novels. I have read them all. Up till now my favs were The Magician's Assistant and Patron Saint of Liars but now they come in second and third to Dutch House. Her characters are unforgettable---- dialogue so realistic, descriptions of the house are visual down to the last detail. This is the best brother/sister novel I have ever read. I hope she wins all the book awards on this year. She is just the best contemporary author today. If I could give 10 stars I would. My New Patchett Favorite! I read Ann Patchett’s “Patron Saint of Liars”, when it came out almost 30 years ago and loved it so much that I wrote Ms. Patchett a letter praising it, and she wrote me a lovely note back; I became a fan for life, reading every one of her marvelous (and unique!) novels. So yes, I was primed to love “The Dutch House”, and I did! Not just because it’s my habit to rave about Patchett’s novels, but because it’s GREAT; it’s my new favorite!“The Dutch House”, (itself as much a character as any of the humans in the novel) is in a suburb of Philadelphia. Just after WWII, Cyril Conroy buys the palatial mansion – fully and sumptuously furnished – for his wife Elna and it is where Danny and Maeve Conroy grew up. Danny is our first-person narrator and he and Maeve are a modern day Hansel and Gretel, complete with abandonment, banishment, and a wicked step-mother. They even have three Fairy Godmothers: Fluffy, Sandy, and Jocelyn.“The Dutch House” is the story of a “modern family”, as this was the era when families started to become fractured and step-parents and step-siblings became more prevalent. Some of these themes Patchett explored beautifully in “Commonwealth”, and she knows whereof she speaks because she’s written essays about her own large, extended, loosely-related-by-a-string, family.I was absorbed from page one, and I hated to turn the last page. What makes Patchett so accessible and relevant is her beautiful writing, her wit, and the fascinating stories she spins out of every-day life.At the most surprising, dramatic, and climactic scene in the novel Danny narrates: “I had not been born with an imagination large enough to encompass this moment.” Well, Ann Patchett was born with an imagination large enough – thank heavens! What a magnificent story!A good, solid 3 I read the book in a couple of sittings. At times it was mesmerizing, at times achingly slow. I just could not shake the feeling that the protagonist/narrator should have been a female. Even his name, ‘Danny,’ is genderless. I understand the plot and structure reasons why he is male, but I find myself disappointed in the traditional role he was assigned, while female characters were not so shackled by convention.
