For thirteen years, from 1920 to 1933, the transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in America. This “Noble Experiment” was undertaken because its supporters believed that alcohol was the single major cause of both crime and poverty. They believed that prohibiting alcohol would lead to the end of poverty and slum housing in the United States and that prisons and jails would no longer be needed.
However, the precise opposite proved to be true. Prohibition led directly to rising crime rates, widespread illegal behavior amongst ordinary Americans, and a loss of respect for laws, law enforcement, and for the apparatus of government. How could something based on such good intentions go so disastrously wrong?

Inside you will read about...

✓ Alcohol in Colonial America
✓ Prohibition Propaganda
✓ The Noble Experiment
✓ Life under Prohibition
✓ Organized Crime and Corruption
✓ Repeal Day
And much more!

This book tells the story of the temperance movement in America, of its rise over a period of one hundred years to encompass the growing women’s movement, and how it eventually attained its goal in 1920. It tells the story of Prohibition itself, of how people exploited loopholes in the law to continue drinking legally, and of how they simply ignored the law and drank illegally. It tells the story of the bootleggers and corrupt officials who made fortunes from Prohibition and the politicians who supported and attacked it. This is the story of a bold experiment undertaken for the very best of reasons which led to the worst of outcomes.

A noble experiment, but a massive failure. While I knew a lot about prohibition by what my parents had told me, I didn't know what a complete failure the amendment actually was.Competent This is a more than competent look at the history, effects and after-life of prohibition in the USA.The background is detailed and interesting, the reasons explained and the effects covered in a logical way.I expected more details on the criminal aspects during prohibition: how they operated, were financed, staffing, etc - it is mentioned, but only in passing.MOST INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE.informative and interesting. filled in some important background facts for me. A good read

The Obesity Code Free Pdf

ISBN: B01MRKEO0U
Title: The Obesity Code Pdf Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss

Everything you believe about how to lose weight is wrong. Weight gain and obesity are driven by hormones - in everyone - and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.

In this highly listenable and provocative book, Dr. Jason Fung sets out an original, robust theory of obesity that provides startling insights into proper nutrition. In addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

It is easy to read and if you have a history of ... Whatever you need to know about Obesity is in this book! It is easy to read and if you have a history of struggling with weight you will be clinging onto every word. I stumbled across Dr. Fung while researching about fasting on youtube. This book gave me more head knowledge and ammo to continue on my weight loss journey!!Update: From January 1st up until October 8th, I have lost a total of 40 lbs using the same principles that Dr. Fung outlines in this book. That is a pound/week and zero exercise or diet products were involved in my transformation. I know a picture is worth a 1000 words, so let me show you progress. If you want to know where the nutrition and health discussion is headed, look no further than The Obesity Code I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this but Dr Jason Fung is a traditional medical doctor in Canada working in the system — where the government won't pay for a medical intervention if it isn't effective. He has helped his patients drop thousands of pounds with an unconventional approach. The book covers the reasons he has elected to take this controversial approach. His program, called intensive dietary management, helps people adapt a low carb diet and intermittent or (when appropriate and supervised) prolonged fasts. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to the connection between what you eat and what you weigh.Dr Fung makes it clear that the calories in/ calories out model of weight management has proved to be a colossal failure, and explains why, covering the nuanced realities of hormones, fasting, carbohydrates, fats, sugars and sleep and the roles each plays in your health. As a doctor myself specializing in weight loss, I too am deeply interested in the disconnect between calories consumed and body weight that seems to trap some people in a metabolic vicious cycle. So I find his focus on this topic fascinating. Particularly interesting are the arguments that lay out why we were wrong about the calories in calories out model and how human physiology seems to defy physics (but actually isn’t, as you’ll see). Each chapter unfolds into a sensible, well researched, very well-reasoned and sometimes sobering discussion of a health topic.Topics include: ▪ the heritability of (a tendency for) obesity ▪ The role of insulin in weight gain ▪ Benefits of fiber to gut health and how that translates to faster weight loss ▪ Probiotics—any reader interested in health should be familiar with this new field. ▪ The power of fasting (yes, fasting) and why it’s not so extremeDr Fung has tapped into something very important and no doubt the future of nutrition and health discussion is going to be centered around concepts found here in The Obesity Code

Winter Hours Pdf

ISBN: B004H1UOEU
Title: Winter Hours Pdf Prose, Prose Poems, and Poems
"What good company Mary Oliver is!" the Los Angeles Times has remarked. And never more so than in this extraordinary and engaging gathering of nine essays, accompanied by a brief selection of new prose poems and poems. (One of the essays has been chosen as among the best of the year by The Best American Essays 1998, another by The Anchor Essay Annual.) With the grace and precision that have won her legions of admirers, Oliver talks here of turtle eggs and housebuilding, of her surprise at the sudden powerful flight of swans, of the "thousand unbreakable links between each of us and everything else." She talks of her own poems and of some of her favorite poets: Poe, writing of "our unescapable destiny," Frost and his ability to convey at once that "everything is all right, and everything is not all right," the "unmistakably joyful" Hopkins, and Whitman, seeking through his poetry "the replication of a miracle." And Oliver offers us a glimpse as well of her "private and natural self -- something that must in the future be taken into consideration by any who would claim to know me."

Fantastic Treat This book is a fantastic treat, whether you're a nature lover or you just like elegant prose. It's readable in tidbits, thankfully, since Oliver always gives a reader many things to consider and doesn't waste words. I just bought a second book for a dear friend. It's that good. For the Love of Mary Like All Of MAry Books…Beautiful. She has a way with words Mary Oliver merges poems and prose in this compact book. It is a unique combination and I like it a lot.
